Earl earns starting berth
Ben Earl will start at Number 8 for Saracens at Cardiff Blues this weekend after impressing as a replacement in last Sunday’s win over the Welsh side.
The 20-year-old led the Men in Black’s second-half charge, scoring with his first two touches. His first try was one of his creation; the former England Under-20s captain forced Blues scrum-half into a fumble by a strong clearout and was on hand to receive the ball from Owen Farrell to crash over two phases later.
Soon after, the back rower displayed terrific line-speed to intercept and run in for his second. He later turned provider, popping up to Ben Spencer off a five-metre scrum allowing the England nine space to dummy his way to the line.
Director of Rugby Mark McCall praised Earl’s impact and his willingness to learn, and the youngster was quick to take lessons from Saracens’ display heading into their match in Wales.
“As a team we know we’ve got a lot more in us,” Earl said.
“We were pretty happy with the second half and the reaction that we had but we look at the first half and we know we can improve, and there were still things in the second half we could improve on.
“We had a really good week’s training and spoke about setting the tone in the first half and we didn’t do that for a number of reasons. We thankfully addressed those.”
He added “We speak about the bench bringing a bit more impetus when the coaches think it’s necessary. The past few weeks we’ve been doing that fantastically and long may it continue.
“The fact of the matter is we’ve got so much left in us and for us to work on; that’s the exciting thing and we shouldn’t need any more motivation than that first half.
“We know if we play to our full potential we can beat most, if not all, sides so hopefully we do that this weekend and that’s definitely what we’ve been working towards this week.”
