Eight Timisoara Saracens Involved as Romania lift European Championship
Last weekend saw Romania defeat Georgia to claim the Rugby European International Championship.
Involved in the Romania squad which claimed an 8-7 win over their rivals were eight players from Timisoara Saracens: Jack Umaga (centre), Stephen Shennan (wing), Catalin Fercu (fullback), Eugen Capatina (hooker), Valentin Poparlan (lock), Dorin Lazar (back row), Jody Rose (fly half) and Madalin Lemnaru (wing).
Also involved in Romania’s campaign this season were Andrei Radoi (hooker) and Ionut Muresan (lock).
The win also meant that Romania claimed the Antim Inireanu Cup for the first time in seven years. The cup is traditionally awarded to the winner of matches between Romania and Georgia.
Reflecting on Romania’s win Valentin Poparlan, who has been capped 67 times by his country, said “Our performance during this year’s European Rugby Championship took us from agony to ecstasy. Being defeated by Germany for the first time in 70 years and then winning over Georgia for the first time in 7 years we proved that despite our weaknesses, we are a strong and determined team, capable to overcome difficulties and learn from our mistakes.
I suppose this year’s REC was about the “impossible” becoming “possible”. This year’s achievement brings us a step closer to qualifying for the 2019 World Rugby Championship and I am convinced that next year we will give our all to secure a spot for Japan, where Romania can continue making a mark into the rugby world.”
