Farrell striving 'to be the best we can be'

Owen Farrell believes Saracens have more to give following last weekend’s bonus-point victory at Newcastle Falcons.

With the score at 21-20 and with Sarries down to 13 men, the Wolfpack needed to dig deep in the North East to ensure a winning start to the 2018/19 Gallagher Premiership season.

Despite describing the team’s performance as ‘impressive’, England man Farrell says they will continue demand more of themselves to improve as a group.

“It was a good win against a tough team,” he said.

“Performance wise we had to deal with quite a bit in terms of yellow cards, people dropping out before the game and things like that which is never an excuse.

“There were also a couple of HIAs with Brad going off and Stretts and Sean, things which could have panicked us but even when we were under the sticks and it was a one-point game I didn’t feel like the lads were panicked at all. It felt like we were in control managed to of what we were doing and that showed with how we were back in the ascendency straight away.

“I think we can get more out of ourselves. We can only strive to be the best that we can be, and we want to push the boundaries in terms of that. We don’t want to be as good as last year, we want to be better and want to be able to adapt to whatever is thrown at us.”

Bristol Bears provide the opposition for Saracens’ first home game of the campaign, and will be buoyed by their opening round, West Country derby win over Bath at Ashton Gate.

With the likes of Steven Luatua and Luke Morahan in tow, Farrell knows the threats Pat Lam’s side but insists the focus is always closer to home.

He said: “It was a big win for them. They’ve made a lot of big name signings, not just this year but last year as well, to make sure they’re ready for when they come up to the Premiership.

“I know they’re ambitious and they want to push on; we’ll be wary of them but it’s about us trying to improve on what we’ve done, making sure we live up to our standards and it’s going to be good to get back home.

“It’ll be a different challenge as they play a bit differently to a lot of teams in the Premiership so we’ll hopefully impose ourselves on them.”
