Getting to know Timisoara Saracens
On Friday 25th August Allianz Park will be welcoming Timisoara Saracens for our final pre-season friendly – K.O. 19.30, ahead of the game we took at closer look at the Romanian side.
The Global Network side have been partnered with Saracens since 2014 but for many fans this will be their first encounter with the Romanian side so ahead of the game we’ve pulled together ten keys facts about Timisoara to help fans know what to expect at Allianz Park on Friday night.
Founded in 1949 as Club Sportiv Universitar Timișoara, the club became Timisoara Saracens in 2014 when they joined the Saracens Global Network.
They play in the 1st division of Romanian rugby called the SuperLiga CEC Bank which they have won 5 times in 1972, 2012, 2013, 2015 & 2016.
When they won in 1972, they were the first club outside Bucharest to do so since the league was founded in 1914.
Two of their players – Cătălin Fercu & Tevita Manumua – previously played for Saracens. Cătălin Fercu featured in the 2014 Saracens Storm game against Timisoara, and the 2015 victorious Saracens v. Harlequins game at Wembley.
11 Timisoara Saracens are included in the 2017/18 Romanian national squad.
In 2014 Saracens Storm played Timisoara Saracens in the Stadionul Dan Păltinişanu – Timisoara won 15-10; 4 Storm players from the 2014 game are now in the Saracens squad - Mike Ellery, Tom Whitely, Nick Tompkins and Maro Itoje.
Timisoara played in the 2016/17 European Challenge Cup where they faced Edinburgh Rugby, Stade Francais Paris and Harlequins.
Timisoara’s 2012/13 season was coached by former Springbok & 1995 World Cup winner, Chester Williams; he coached them to their first league title in over 40 years.
The side are now coached by Matt Williams, former Scotland Head Coach and Leinster Director of Rugby and Backs Coach.
In 2015 Timisoara Saracens won every domestic title in Romania - King's Cup 2015, Romanian Cup 2015 and National Champions in SuperLiga CEC Bank, 2015 edition!
