Gray provides honest assessment of Bath display
Joe Gray gave an honest assessment of Saracens’ performance in the defeat to Bath Rugby on Friday night.
Referee Andrew Jackson penalised Sarries 19 times in a physical contest in the Somerset rain and Rhys Priestland’s boot proved pivotal as a result – the Welshman knocking over six strikes from the tee to Alex Lozowski’s three.
Next week is a break from league action for the Men in Black as they prepare for the Premiership Rugby Cup final against Northampton Saints and Gray is expecting a reaction in training ahead of it.
“It was a really frustrating, disappointing game. It was very tough and a lot of it was our own doing,” he said of the Bath match.
“Discipline let us down a lot, we had a lot of opportunities which we messed up due to discipline.
“There were lots of opportunities out there but we just let them into the game and gave them momentum. We lost a lot of the physical battle, they got momentum to play; they had too much time, too much space and we let them offload.
“In the conditions we knew it was going to be a physical battle, we needed to get off the line, hit people when we carried, drive hard and we didn’t do that for large parts of the game.
“Everyone has to have a big week going into the final.”
