In Focus: Jamie George Bringing More Intensity to His Game
Jamie George is using his British and Irish Lions experience and new contract to help bring more intensity to his game.
George, 26, signed a long-term contract extension that will keep him with Saracens through to 2021. He scored a hat-trick against Wasps, and is flying high after earning three Lions test caps over the summer.
Playing some of the best rugby of his career, he reflected on what a busy year has done for his development.
George said: “I took a huge amount of experience from that Lions tour. I feel like I’ve developed hugely as a player off the back of it. It’s given me an increased confidence, but at the same time a bigger expectation of myself. I want to make sure that I’m playing to a standard I am proud of.”
Another academy graduate, he is Saracens through and through, having first joined the club aged 14.
George said: “It’s the club that I’ve grown up playing for, the club I’ve grown up supporting my whole life. To be signing here for the long-term and to have played here for a long time already is a huge honour.”
The hooker is now turning his attention to another Champions Cup defence and the tough Premiership season.
An established leader on the team, he is learning to use the influence he has on others to help his own game.
George said: “I want to bring my leadership style to my game. That’s something I probably needed to add to what I was doing before. I feel good when I am talking and expressing my opinion – within reason. I feel like I’m engaged more in the game and it brings the best out of me as a player.
“I want to make sure that my involvement in games is really high and that I continue to play at an intensity that I’m happy with.”
He will help lead Saracens this weekend as they begin their Champions Cup campaign away against Northampton Saints before the side returns to Allianz Park to take on Ospreys.
