Itoje Makes Debut In Rome As Taylor Impresses In Cardiff
It was a big weekend on the Six Nations stage for Saracens’ international contingent. Seven Sarries were in action in England’s five try victory over Italy in Rome while Duncan Taylor impressed for Scotland in Cardiff.
Perhaps the most memorable moment for Saracens fans watching England this weekend was the introduction of Maro Itoje as a second half substitute for his International debut. Itoje has been on stellar form all season for Saracens and, after travelling to Scotland last week but not featuring in the match day squad, got the chance to impress England fans with a positive debut in Rome.
Itoje was joined on the pitch at the Stadio Olimpico by all six of his fellow Saracens in the squad. George Kruis, Owen Farrell, Billy Vunipola and Mako Vunipola all started with Jamie George and Alex Goode among the replacements alongside Itoje. Mako Vunipola impressed again with his handling skills while England’s fifth try was tailor made in NW4 as Jamie George offloaded to Farrell who crossed over under the sticks.
Over in Cardiff Duncan Taylor was also making waves, scoring a well finished try in the closing minutes of the game and showing his defensive qualities with a try saving tackle. Despite eventually going down 27-23 it was an improved performance from Scotland and Sarries fans will be hoping Taylor’s efforts will cement his position in the side for the vital clash against Italy in two weeks time.
