Itoje Remaining Calm Ahead of Champions Cup Final
Maro Itoje has confirmed that the squad are in good spirits and that preparations are going well as Saracens gear up to face Clermont in the Champions Cup final at Murrayfield on Saturday.
Itoje was speaking on Wednesday afternoon and was his usual calm self ahead of Saturday’s huge match, he said: “Preparations have been good; the boys are on it and are putting things in place to try to give a positive performance on the pitch”
“The coaches are always good and are always on top of keeping the boys energised.
“They make sure that we have fun when the time is right but when it is time to train they’ll flip the switch.
He added: “The boys are on it, we’re aware of the magnitude of the challenge but we’re looking forward to it.”
“We’re looking to go out and put a positive performance in and give a good representation of ourselves and make sure we play well.”
The 22-year-old was man of the match in the 2016 final win against Racing 92 as Sarries claimed their first European crown, something Clermont are yet to achieve and he explained that this would be a motivating factor for the French club.
He explained: “Obviously, they want to win the cup, they’ve been close a few times but not quite done it. They’re a big, physical team with a strong set-piece and a deadly attack as well.
“It’s going to be a tough game but one we’re looking forward to.”
