Last minute Ashton try seals win for Sarries over Newcastle

In their last home game of 2016 Saracens were made to work for the win by a solid Newcastle Falcon’s side but a last minute try from Chris Ashton sealed the Christmas Eve win for the North Londoners.

The first points of the day went the way of the visitors as Joel Hodgson got his side on the board with a penalty within the first five minutes of the game but Sarries were quick to reply as Newcastle were penalised from the re-start and Owen Farrell found the target.

Newcastle put the pressure on the home side early in the game, driving forward and pushing Sarries close to the try line as they hunted a score. The visitors were unable to cross the whitewash but after Sarries were penalised for an off-side, Joel Hodgson restored his side’s lead from the tee.

Newcastle continued to keep pace with the home side with their forward pack playing their part in the shape of the half but with 20 minutes gone in the half Saracens were in for their first try of the afternoon when Ben Spencer fed Marcelo Bosch from the base of the ruck and Bosch was able to dodge his way through the Newcastle defence to score.

With five minutes to play in the half Farrell added another penalty to take the sides in at the break with the score 13-6 to Saracens.

Saracens started the second half brightly as Richard Barrington and Jamie George combined to take Saracens into the Falcons 22 but Saracens were unable to capitalise on their opportunity and the visitors cleared the danger.

Saracens were unable to build on that start however and as the half wore on errors began to creep into both sides’ games. Newcastle continued to hold much of the possession, making Saracens work for their opportunities throughout the half.

Owen Farrell added the first points of the second half with just ten minutes left to play as he extended Saracens lead to 16-6 with a penalty kick then, with the minutes ticking down, Saracens found themselves with numbers on the far side of the pitch and it was Chris Ashton, making his return to the match day squad, who dived over to score.  Final score Saracens 21 Newcastle Falcons 6
