Let’s Celebrate National Walking Month!
May is National Walking Month and we at Saracens Sport Foundation are huge advocators of walking, and in particular Nordic Walking! Our Love to Move programme, offers Nordic Walking sessions four times a week for over 50’s across Barnet, and involves over 50 people a week literally taking strides to improve their physical strength and in doing so, their mental wellbeing too.
Nordic Walking benefits everyone, from the super fit, to those with medical problems.
- Nordic Walking uses 90% of the skeletal muscles, reduces pressure on knees and joints
- Nordic Walking ideal for shoulder, back and neck problems
- Nordic Walking burns up to 46% more calories than normal walking.
Poles push you further which makes it easier to move faster without feeling the extra effort, for this reason it is one of the most effective cross training activities to build up stamina and cardio endurance.
However, the physical benefits are only half of the story! Nordic Walking is an incredibly social activity, one of our groups have even named themselves the ‘Walkie Talkies’ as they have formed strong friendships on their weekly walks. Combining exercise with nature is proven to boost your mood and this has certainly been the case for many of our participants. One of our participants, who we have now funded to become a community instructor herself, had this to say:
“Walking has become such a big part of my life and having been on anti-depressants for 14 years, I have now stopped taking them, another thing I put down to the positivity of this activity.”
Being part of the Love to Move family also offers many extra opportunities. The Nordic Walking groups recently completed a 4mile or 14mile walk across London for Moorfields Eye Hospital.
Participants may also attend other sessions in the week including dance, Pilates, athletics and touch rugby or attend one of our social events such as our Christmas Dance party or our upcoming quiz night. We love to see our participants improving their fitness and making new friends at the same time!
