Lions hit back to record win over Crusaders

Six Sarries were involved as the Lions recorded an important 12-3 victory over the Crusaders in Christchurch’s AMI Stadium, in a match characterised by their impressive defence- masterminded by coach and former Saracen Andy Farrell.

Two-time tourists Mako Vunipola and Owen Farrell were joined by George Kruis, Jamie George and Liam Williams, with teammate Maro Itoje named on the bench.

The Lions’ opposition were the ‘team to beat’ in the Southern Hemisphere; they hadn’t lost all season in Super Rugby, were on a 14-game winning streak and had 9 All Blacks in their side, and the match was expected to be as close to Test match standard as possible.

Slippery conditions limited the game to merely penalties, with the TMO denying try-scoring opportunities for both sides, so all eyes were on the kickers converting those penalties into points.

The ever-reliant metronomic boot of Owen Farrell scored all of the Lions’ 12 points, kicking 4 out of 5, and he ensured his forward pack’s impressive scrum performances were rewarded.

The tourists’ next challenge is tomorrow in the town of Dunedin in New Zealand’s South Island, where they will face Super Rugby side the Highlanders, with kick-off at 08H35 UK time, and Saracens’ Owen Farrell has been named on the bench.
