Lions name team to face Maori All Blacks on Saturday

The Lions pack is studded with Saracens forwards, as Mako Vunipola, Jamie George and the lock pairing of Maro Itoje and George Kruis all feature in the starting 15 for the clash against the Maori All Blacks.

Fly half Owen Farrell was due to be on the bench for the match in Rotorua on Saturday, but has been ruled out due to a quad strain, and has been replaced by Wales’ Dan Biggar.

Munster’s Peter O’Mahony will captain the side for the first time in his career, with the intensity of the game expected to be close to next week’s test match standard. O’Mahony is part of a scrum that sees only one change from the forwards that played in last week’s defeat of the Crusaders in Christchurch, with Maro Itoje coming in for the experienced Alun Wyn Jones who had a longer than expected outing from the bench against the Highlanders on Tuesday.

Gatland’s side will be hoping that this team will gel and have the ability to iron out some of the errors that have been present in the Lions’ performances so far this tour. The side named sees some notable familiar combinations feature- England and Sarries lock duo Itoje and Kruis and Ireland’s half-backs Conor Murray and Johnny Sexton being two such pairings.

The game kicks off at 08H35 in the UK, and is the penultimate game before the first test match a week on Saturday.
