London Stadium will create a platform for new fans - Vunipola
Billy Vunipola is hoping Saturday’s match at London Stadium will help increase the club’s fanbase.
For the past couple of years, Saracens have hosted this weekend’s opponents Harlequins at Wembley but a new venue will house the latest derby.
It is the first time a club rugby fixture has been played at the Stratford base and with over 55,000 supporters in attendance, Vunipola is looking for Sarries to put on a show to entice new fans to Allianz Park.
Chatting to talkSPORT, the back rower said: “It’s always a great occasion when we play Quins.
“Moving from Wembley from last year and the year before will hopefully bring in some new fans in a new area.
“That’s always a massive goal for us as rugby players and teams is trying to attract as many new fans as we can.
“Hopefully London Stadium will create that platform for us.”
Saracens are currently third in the Aviva Premiership following back-to-back defeats to Leicester Tigers and league leaders Exeter Chiefs.
Rob Baxter’s side sit eight points ahead of the Men in Black but when asked if the Devon club were Sarries only rivals for success, Vunipola disagreed.
“I don’t think we as Saracens only think we’re challenging Exeter,” he said.
“In the past few weeks we’ve lost to Exeter and Leicester, and we’ve lost to teams fans feel we shouldn’t be losing to and that’s something we need to learn from.
“You can probably put Quins in there; it sounds arrogant but it’s not. It’s one of those games where people expect us to win and that feeds into our psyche.
“That’s why Quins are always a tough opponent for us as they always manage to beat us which is what makes next weekend such a tasty encounter.”
