Mark McCall Reflects on Barritt’s 200th appearance

On a weekend full of superlatives for Saracens’ captain – the 200-man Brad Barritt – some words stand out above the rest.

As is the case for the praise from Saracens Director of Rugby Mark McCall. Typically full of humility on his players behalf, he made a brief exception this week to recognise Barritt’s immense contribution.

McCall said: “He sets an unbelievable example on the field, where he is as competitive a person as you will find anywhere. Off the field he does all the right things as well. He has been massively central to the environment that exists here.”

Since arriving at the club in 2008, Barritt has helped oversee Saracens rise to the top of Premiership and European rugby. The culture he has helped inspire rings true around Allianz Park to this day and has helped countless players realise their potential.

Barritt himself his hugely thankful of the opportunities he has received.

He said: “To play with guys you call friends is pretty special.

“It is a great milestone. When you first start at a club you never know how long it’s going to continue. I’m obviously really proud to have played for this club 200 times. It’s an immensely proud moment for me, my wife, and son.”

Not wanting to save all the praise for himself though, Barritt reflected on the influence McCall has had on his career and the Saracens team.

He said: “If everyone knew how much he puts into the organisation they would be stunned. I have a huge amount of respect and admiration for him.”

The admiration for both men – though deserved – will be short lived, as Saracens focus locks in on Wasps this afternoon. A challenging test against one of the most dangerous teams in the Premiership.
