Maro Itoje: "I Feel I've Come Back Stronger"
Maro Itoje says that he has ‘come back stronger’ from injury and is ready to help Saracens against Ospreys at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday evening.
Itoje spent five weeks out with a jaw injury but returned to the side to help Sarries overcome Wasps 15-38 last weekend and the 23-year old has said that he is not feeling any issues with his jaw as the Men in Black prepare for a European double-bill.
He explained: “My jaw’s absolutely fine, it felt good. Throughout the Wasps game I didn’t even think about it once I got going so the jaw’s good.
“I feel I’ve come back stronger, there were a few recurring niggles which I’ve managed to iron out now, fortunately your jaw doesn’t affect your legs and arms so I was able to lift properly in the gym and I was able to run so I feel in decent nick, it’s just about playing now.”
Saracens can maintain their defence of back-to-back European crowns with wins in their final two group games and Itoje says that he is keen to get started and back involved after missing last month’s games against Clermont.
The forward said: “The next two weeks mark a big few weeks for the club, it basically sets up our European destiny so we need a result this week.
“It’s massive and I was very eager to come back and hopefully play a part in helping the club get to where they want to get to.”
Saracens have turned their form around and after a disappointing run of results have now notched up three successive wins and hope to make it four against the Welsh side on Saturday and Itoje has praised the group mentality that has seen Sarries through, saying:
“It’s about having each other’s backs, we’re a tight group here at Saracens and I think that’s what’s seen us through some big games in the last couple of years and it’s important that we keep that and stick together.”
He added: “With the quality of coaches that we have and the quality of players that we have at our disposal, if we stick together in the long run we’ll be alright.”
