Match Preview: Saracens v Leicester Tigers
After two weeks of Champions Cup action the Aviva Premiership makes its return this weekend.
Saracens will welcome Leicester Tigers to Allianz Park in a match up between two of the league’s heavyweight teams.
Leicester come into the game off the back of a big Champions Cup win over last year’s finalists Racing 92 but their Aviva Premiership form has been more mixed so far this season.
Impressive wins against Bath and Worcester have been balanced out by loses to Sale and Wasps while it was a tight trip up to Kingston Park for the Tigers as they overcame Newcastle by a single point. Away from home in the Premiership this season Leicester have conceded 24 tries whilst scoring 16 and they have not been victorious on Saracens soil since their trip to Vicarage Road in February 2012.
Last Time Out
Saracens and Leicester met three times last season with their last encounter coming in the Premiership semi-final at Allianz Park. On that day Saracens raced to a 31-0 lead in the first half thanks to tries from Chris Wyles, Will Fraser and Chris Ashton before Leicester fought back in the second half, scoring 17 unanswered points. Saracens however added another try from Chris Ashton to secure the win. 44-17 the final score.
One to Watch
One of a number of big games to arrive in the Aviva Premiership this season, South African JP Pietersen joined the Tigers from Japanese club Wild Knights. The winger is a World Cup winner with South Africa and has earned 69 caps since making his debut a decade ago. Recently named in the South Africa squad for the Autumn Internationals and described by Richard Cockerill as “a world class finisher” Pietersen is poses a big potential threat from out wide this weekend.
“Leicester are obviously a great side. They had a really good performance in the European game [last] weekend, so I’m sure they’ll be really up for it and before the week off it’ll be a last big push for the result we’ll have to be on our game. They’ve got good forwards so we’ll really have to step up and it would be nice to go in this off week with a victory.” – Michael Rhodes
