Match Preview: Saracens v Newcastle

Saracens take on Newcastle Falcons at Allianz Park this Saturday in the last home at Allianz Park and the first Christmas Eve fixture.

The game also marks the return of the Aviva Premiership after the Champions Cup break and Saracens will be looking to get back to winning ways in the competition after a round 10 loss to Bath down at The Rec.

The Opposition

Newcastle come into the game in great form, having won three of their last four matches in all tournaments, and looking to record a third successive victory in the Premiership for the first time since the 2009/10 season. The Falcons away form however has been mixed this season, with only two Aviva Premiership wins against Gloucester and Northampton Saints to their name away from Kingston Park. They face a tough challenge this weekend too; Saracens have won their last 15 fixtures in all competitions against Newcastle since 2009.

Last Time Out

Saracens have met Newcastle once already this season, when the two sides met in the Anglo-Welsh Cup. On the day Saracens scored four tries to Newcastle’s two to secure a 29-13 victory over the Falcons. Nick Tompkins, Jared Saunders, Scott Spurling and George Perkins were the try scorers on the day with Tom Whitely adding the remainder of the points with the boot.

One To Watch

20 year old number 8 Callum Chick only made his Aviva Premiership debut at the end of November this season but since then has become a regular in Newcastle’s domestic and European squads. A product of the Newcastle academy, Chick is also a former England U20s captain having lead the side against Italy and Ireland during last season’s U20s Six Nations

We Said

“We’re getting there and we’re working hard and the results have gone our way so far, but it’s a long season and it’s just a matter of making the most of the run we’re on at the moment, but as Harlequins and Bath have reminded us already this season, if you’re not on you game then you’re for the taking so we know that Saturday we’ll have to be on our mettle against a strong Newcastle team.” Schalk Brits
