Match Preview: Saracens v Ospreys

After a stunning performance in round one Saracens welcome Welsh side Ospreys to Allianz Park on Saturday for round two of the Champions Cup.

The Opposition

While their Pro14 form has been lacking this season Ospreys kicked off their Champions Cup campaign by running Clermont close at the Liberty Stadium last weekend. In the end last season’s finalists proved too strong for the Welsh side but Ospreys claimed a losing bonus point from the game. Saracens and Ospreys have met three times in the Champions Cup in the past and while Saracens have come out on top in all three meetings Ospreys have never lost by more than nine points.

One to watch – Dan Lydiate

Back in action after ten months out on the sidelines due to injury flanker Lydiate put in a strong performance against Clermont. Known for his solid defence and impressive tackle rate Lydiate will be a key player as Ospreys try to contain the Saracens attack

“I was very impressed with Ospreys. They got off to a very poor start but thereafter they were the better team. Arguably they could have or should have won the match. We’re not taking them for granted. They’ve got lots of very good players - well-established international players - and they will be massively up for the challenge so we’ve got to go again.” – Mark McCall

Centre Owen Watkin told the Saracens website: “Its going to be a tough ask for us everyone knows there’s the top team about these days…we’re confident we can put a performance in”

Last time out

Saracens and Ospreys last faced each other in the Champions Cup back in December 2011. It was a fierce encounter between the sides which eventually saw Saracens run out winners at The Liberty Stadium by 16 points to 13. Ernst Joubert scored Sarries’ only try of the day while 11 points from the boot of Owen Farrell secured the victory.
