Match Preview: Saracens v Toulon
The last round of the Champions Cup group stages takes place this weekend with everything still to play for for both Saracens and Toulon at Allianz Park on Saturday.
A Saracens win will guarantee the North Londoners a home quarter final, after the Men in Black secured their spot in the last eight last weekend. A Toulon win would see the French side themselves into the knock out stages of the completion.
Currently lying second in the pool, Toulon sit five points behind leaders Saracens. Their top points scorer is Leigh Halfpenny with 67 and only Owen Farrell (74) and Isa Nacewa of Leinster (75) have scored more so far this season. Up front Toulon have a success rate of 90% plus at both the lineout and the scrum. The only other teams to match this are again Saracens and Leinster. Toulon have scored an average of 23.4 points per game so far this season in the Champions Cup but have failed to hit 20 points in both their two most recent away wins over Aviva Premiership opposition.
One to Watch
Australian international Matt Giteau returned to action last weekend after spending the last four months sidelined with a broken ankle and impressed after coming on as a substitute. With 103 caps for his country and a wealth of experience with Toulon, including three European Cup titles, Giteau’s experience could prove key as Toulon chase a crucial win.
“They’re a tough team, they’ve got a plethora of talent from 1-23. Their team is full of internationals, and not any internationals, quality internationals so it’s never easy. They’re pretty big as well so it’s going to be taxing in that regard but it’s a challenge we’re looking forward to. “ – Maro Itoje
