Match Report: Saracens 38-19 Wasps
A Jamie George hat-trick helped Saracens to a 38-19 bonus point win over Wasps and moved the side to the top of the Premiership standings.
Chris Wyles scored Sarries other try, and Alex Lozowski’s boot was in good form to keep Saracens firmly in control on the day.
Owen Farrell was withdrawn from the team sheet shortly before the contest with a minor calf-injury, though it is not likely to keep him out long-term.
Captain Brad Barritt led the team to a fast start in his 200th appearance for the club.
An early overlap appeared from a stolen lineout, and a perfectly weighted kick by Alex Goode put Wyles in for the opening score after only six minutes.
Soon after Wyles was at it again, his quick tap put George over the line as Saracens began to ooze confidence.
The team spent most of the opening 20-minutes deep in Wasps territory, though fell painfully short of a few chances and a Josh Bassett break finally gave Wasps some respite.
They seized on a chance deep in Saracens territory and mauled over the line to get back into the contest.
From there, the game slowed down as both sides began trading blows. However, Lozowski’s boot was enough to capitalise on penalties and ensure Saracens went into the half with a comfortable 18-7 lead.
The second half started in much the same way, with penalties once again hurting the visitors. Lozowski’s boot set Saracens up in the corner and George benefitted from the ensuing maul, scoring his second try of the day.
15-minutes later it was rinse and repeat. Another line-out, another maul, and another try for George as Saracens secured the four try bonus point.
Wasps fought back, crossing the line with 10-minutes to go and again on the final whistle. Though it was too late to have Saracens looking over their shoulder.
