Match Report: Wasps Ladies 17-45 Saracens Women
Saracens Women ensured they will finish the year top of the Tyrrells Premier 15s table with a convincing win over London rivals Wasps Ladies.
Seven tries – two each from Hannah Botterman and May Campbell – and a solid defensive performance secured the bonus point victory in a fiery game at Twyford Avenue.
A penalty to Wasps in the second minute were the first points Saracens have conceded since 3rdNovember five games ago, but it was not long before the visitors were on the scoreboard.
Saracens turned down three points to kick for the corner and from the lineout a driving maul – which would prove to be huge asset throughout the game – allowed May Campbell to go over.
Ten minutes later Sarah McKenna doubled Sarries’ tally, showing brilliant pace and strength in a solo darting run through the Wasps defence that started on the right and finished on the left.
Another driving maul sent Botterman over for her first of the game five minutes before half time, but shortly after the break Wasps were awarded a penalty try for a high tackle, resulting in a yellow card for Georgie Lingham.
The hosts could not make the numerical advantage count, however, and it was Saracens who extended their lead when Zoe Harrison – impressive all game with the boot – kicked deep into touch and Campbell went over from the driving maul.
Next came a penalty try to Saracens for Wasps bringing down the maul, and Botterman soon after grabbed her second in an almost carbon copy of Campbell’s effort minutes earlier.
The last of the visitors’ points came from a lovely break on the left, Wardle breaking clear before offloading to Harrison to score.
Wasps grabbed a try in the last few minutes to narrow the gap, but the day belonged to Saracens who remain four points clear of Harlequins at the top of the league heading into 2019.
