McCall Full of Praise After Successive Champions Cup Wins
Mark McCall praised his Saracens side’s approach as they secured back-to-back Champions Cups with a win over Clermont at Murrayfield on Saturday.
McCall arrived at Saracens in 2009 as head coach and has since overseen unprecedented levels of success in winning two Champions Cup titles as well as three Premiership titles and an LV Cup.
Speaking at the post-match press-conference he praised his side’s performance and said that it could have been even better.
He explained: “It felt like we were dominant for long periods and dominated a lot of territory and attacked very well but we were never away on the scoreboard.
“It was one of those games where they scored their 100-metre try which was great for them and then it was 18-17 and we should have been in control; the only place we weren’t in control was the scoreboard
“Our response to their try which could have knocked us, was outstanding,”, he added “We played some fantastic rugby and put them under pressure for 20 minutes and I think we got what we deserved.”
The win sees Sarries set the all-time record for unbeaten games in the Champions Cup with 18 and became just the fourth team to win back-to back Champions Cups.
McCall said: “We looked like we improved from last year, it was a different kind of final; today we showed some great qualities, all parts of our game were really strong.
“We think that the age profile of the group is good and if we’re hungry enough and humble enough there’s no reason why we can’t get better.
“I’m just chuffed that with the manner in which we did it today; obviously the achievement of winning back-to-back Champions Cups is amazing but I was just delighted with the way we did it.”
