McCall praises England contingent
Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall praised his side’s youthful England contingent after Saracens beat Northampton Saints 12-6 in Saturday’s Aviva Premiership clash at Franklin’s Gardens.
In Saracens’ fourth win from as many games in the 2015/16 Premiership campaign, McCall’s side edged out the Saints in a contest that was low of chances but high on endeavour and physicality.
‘I thought it was a brilliant away performance by us,” said McCall. “We came up here, ended up dominating the game and controlled the last 25 minutes, defended magnificently and I am chuffed to bits that we got a win at a very difficult place.’
“We want to play, but sometimes you get games like today, where the ball is incredibly slow and slippy and you have to grind it out – our job was to make sure we won,” said the two-time Premiership winning coach.
In what proved to be a typically attritional affair McCall was delighted with the contribution of his younger English stars, in particular 21-year old lock Maro Itoje, and Man of the Match George Kruis.
Speaking after the game, McCall said: “”‘I thought all of our English players were magnificent today – Richard Wigglesworth as well as Owen Farrell. Brad Barritt led the team well in the second half when Alistair Hargreaves went off.
“Our young second rows were exceptional – George Kruis and Maro Itoje were truly brilliant and led the charge physically in the second half.”
