McCall Praises Sarries Defence After Wasps Win
After his side’s victory over Wasps today at Allianz Park McCall praised his side’s defense but admits there is still work to be done in attack.
Speaking after the game against Wasps the Saracen Director of Rugby was pleased with his side's effort but bemoaned moments of ill-discipline which disrupted the pressure the home side were able to put on the visitors. “I thought we put [Wasps] under a lot of pressure, put them into lots of difficult situations” he said. “[But we] didn’t always capatalise on the pressure we put them under, especially in the first half. I think we couldn’t sustain pressure in that first half because of our discipline. I think we gave away 10, 11 penalties in the first half which were pretty soft penalties in general…so it was a bit frustrating but I thought the players didn’t get frustrated by those things and they kept building the pressure on Wasps and that’s obviously a great result for us, to come away with 5 points against a quality side”
Overall McCall was pleased with his side’s display adding “there’s quite a large part of our game which is in quite good shape. I thought our defence has been good all season to be honest. I think we’ve conceded 4 tries in 6 games, which is a good record, and we controlled them for 35 minutes defensively but you make one mistake against them, which we did, and they score a try."
“Our set piece is also in good shape” he added although looking ahead to the return of the Champions Cup next weekend he also admitted “our attack needs to get a bit better, there were some signs of that in the second half today, but if we can put that together with the rest of our game that’ll be encouraging”.
