McCall praises youngsters following Leicester defeat
Mark McCall praised the impact his young Saracens players made from the bench during the 20-28 defeat to Leicester Tigers at Allianz Park.
England Under-20s fly-half Max Malins touched down twice in the second period while Scott Spurling, Tom Whiteley and Rotimi Segun also impressed.
However, the damage from the visitors had been inflicted earlier in the contest which McCall says his side failed to bounce back from.
He told Saracens.com: "The kids who came off the bench in the last 15 or 20 minutes did brilliantly and gave us a real bit of energy.
"It was an incredible impact from the bench. Max Malins, Tom Whiteley and Scott Spurling all did well and it’s a shame we couldn’t have stuck in at the end.’"
McCall continued: "We never really recovered from the first half; we were always on the back foot.
"I’m not sure we deserved the losing bonus point but if we took one or two chances early in the second half then it would have given us something to hang our hat on.
"We defended for the whole of the half and didn’t defend very well. We lost a lot of collisions all the way through but to give Leicester some credit they were really physical and confrontational in attack.
"They kept on winning the gain line and we were going backwards a lot of the time. Overall it was a very poor display."
Saracens lost two players to injury in the first period; Callum Clark was withdrawn with an injury to his forearm and his replacement Sione Vailanu also suffered an early exit.
McCall confirmed the former went straight to hospital for his arm to be examined.
