McCall Reflects On Side's Resolve After Victory Over Saints
Saracens Director of Rugby Mark McCall pleased with side’s resolve after Saracens come through tough encounter with Northampton Saints.
It was another tough outing against Northampton Saints for Saracens who managed to pull ahead in the second half despite the score line being locked 9-9 at the half time break.
“We were probably second best first half” admitted McCall, “and we allowed some things to get under our skin a little bit. Their line speed was tremendous, they went hard at the ball, we couldn’t get any quick ball, we weren’t quite ourselves in the first half. It was a big ask really to be 9 all playing into that really stiff wind in the second half, but I thought we did a phenomenal job in the second half and the most encouraging thing was that we found a way to win whilst not really being at our best.”
The Saracens Director of Rugby also paid tribute to man of the man Schalk Burger who was playing in his first game for Saracens at Allianz Park.
“He was absolutely tremendous” said McCall. “In some respects the more physical the game, the more competitive the game, the more he likes it! I think he’s one of those guys who rises to the front in situations like that.”
But McCall also acknowledged that despite a strong second half showing there would be improvements needed from his side ahead of their trip to Harlequins next weekend.
“We were against a top side today, with really good players, playing into a really strong wind in the second half and we won the second half 18-3, and we won it comfortably to be honest. So I thought we did a great job” he said, adding “there’s things for us to get better at obviously because we were poor in the first half today, but I’m glad we had the resolve and the energy to win the game”
