Mean Machine at Allianz Park
Valentine’s Day 2016 was far different to the normal, as Allianz Park played hosts to the Feltham Screws (Prison officers) rugby team and families. The match was played as a very entertaining curtain raiser before the Saracens v Wasps game.
This was the second Mean Machine match and is now becoming an annual event between the Screws and Saracens Staff, once again its was played in great spirits to showcase the fantastic work the Saracens Sport Foundations Get Onside project does alongside Feltham YOI.
A number of ex-offenders (participants) graced the field playing a huge role for the Saracens Staff team and getting on the score sheet more than once. This award winning program continues to inspire young people and is going from strength to strength.
On the day we even had some staff playing who had never played rugby before, and having comments like “can’t believe it’s taken me 47 years to play this game", "I love it", "so physical yet so friendly", "no sport like it"," I even prefer it to football now” is fantastic for building on the awareness and ethos of what sport and specifically rugby can do to bring people together, change lives and inspire communities.
