Saracens - Mean Machine Curtain Raiser

Mean Machine Curtain Raiser

This weekend sees the return of the annual Mean Machine curtain raiser game.

This game celebrates the “Get Onside” Programme with officers and staff from Feltham Young Offenders Institute (YOI) playing against previous participants of the Get Onside programme and Saracens staff.

The Get Onside Programme aims to support young offenders in preparing for release from prison. Participants spend 8 weeks taking part in rugby sessions, underpinned by the Saracens core values, and combine this with classroom sessions, developing the life skills that will support those participants to succeed and improve their life opportunities.

The programme boasts impressive results. The re-offending rate for those who completed the course is currently at 15% - compared to the national average of 69% - this success comes not only from a challenging and varied programme but also from the ‘through the gate’ support that participants receive on release.

“I feel that without your help I wouldn’t have been able to achieve what we achieved during the months I have been in HMP Prison.” (Get Onside Programme Graduate, 2016)

If you would like to know more about the programme or you have opportunities for any Get Onside graduates then please contact Nick at nickgourlay@saracens.net.
