Saracens - Meet our Marathon Runners

Meet our Marathon Runners

With the Marathon just over 6 weeks away, we want to introduce the first of our fantastic runners taking on the ultimate running challenge in support of Saracens Sport Foundation.

Meet Helen Killner...

Occupation:  Senior Apprenticeship Assessor

Hobbies: Running (only for the past year) , Skiing, Cycling with the family and walking

Why have you chosen to run for Saracens Sport Foundation?

I always used to say that I hate running and I can't do it... just over a year ago, in January 2017, I couldn't run (& breathe at the same time) to the end of my road. I then decided to join a local ladies running group - Athena in St Albans. I started with the 0-5k programme and then progressed to the 5-10k programme and by July I was running my first 10k. With the support and friendship from many ladies (including Ruth Kent, Senior Development Manager for Health & Wellbeing Manager at Saracens Sport Foundation) in this group I then completed my first half marathon in November.

I now have this amazing opportunity to complete the London Marathon and raise funds for a charity that (like Athena ladies running group) is also dedicated to engaging the community to bring about positive change to peoples lives.

What do you think your biggest challenge will be?

Fitting in the long training sessions whilst juggling with family life and working out what works for me during the long runs - nutrition, clothing etc

What is your training routine like?

I try and get to Athena twice a week, one session is development and we train on hills or on speed. The other session is a social run round the streets and parks in St Albans. My long runs take place at the weekend and usually involves a group of ladies from Athena. We plan a couple of routes, at different lengths. I also attend Pilates once a week to help with stretching and muscle conditioning.

How will you prepare the day before the marathon?

Gentle stretching, relaxing and I will try and get an early night!

We would like to thank you for your support and wish you the best of luck for the 22nd April Helen!
