Nick Tompkins Looks Ahead to Timisoara Saracens Match
In 2014, Premiership A-League side Saracens Storm took on Romanian Global Network partner team Timisoara Saracens in a friendly, narrowly losing 15-10.
Now, three years on, Timisoara travel to North London to provide the senior squads final preseason test before the London Double Header on the 2nd September.
A testament to the Global Network Partnership, that friendly in Western Romania helped spark the careers of current stars, such as Nick Tompkins, Maro Itoje, Tom Whitely, and Mike Ellery; who have helped Saracens win Premiership and Champions Cup titles.
It also helped Timisoara kick start their most successful period in history, becoming back-to-back Romanian SuperLiga champions, and earning a Challenge Cup spot in last year’s competition.
For the first time ever, they now travel to Allianz Park to take on Saracens, and the Men in Black are embracing the opportunity to rub shoulder with the Romanians.
Nick Tompkins, part of the 2014 Storm squad, said: “These kinds of games shouldn’t be overlooked.
“It’s going to be a really good test. A great test for our defence to see what we can do, because we have made changes.”
The game will also see the return of fullback/winger Catalin Fercu to Allianz Park. He made six appearances for Saracens in 2014/15 before becoming a stalwart for Timisoara.
Tompkins said: “He’s an awesome player, it’s a massive opportunity for us.
“They are a good outfit so it’s going to be a good test.”
Friday night’s game is this year’s sole preseason fixture at Allianz Park, and Tompkins spoke about the excitement of Saracens home games, saying it would be fantastic to get a win in front of a great crowd.
