Packer – “I’m out to leave nothing in the tank”

Flanker Marlie Packer has certainly made her mark in her debut season at Sarries and is looking forward to taking to the field on Sunday when Saracens Women take on Harlequins Ladies for the Premier 15s final.

"It feels absolutely fantastic to have made the inaugural Premier 15s final” said Packer.

“All season we knew that this is where we wanted to be, playing for that trophy, but we knew we just had to take it one game at a time. I think going in to Sunday’s game it doesn’t matter how we’ve played before, it’s all about this game and we need to go out there and play our best rugby as a squad, as units and as individuals because just like all season it’s going to take a massive squad effort to get the win.

I’ve had an unforgettable first season with Sarries and there’s still more to come. I had a fairytale start with my first game for the club scoring six tries so now to go on and be playing in the final on Sunday is pretty awesome. All that is left now is to head back to Allianz Park with the trophy which would top if off.”

The destructive open side currently sits top of the league try scoring charts, crossing the whitewash an impressive twenty times this season but is quick to credit her team mates.

Well I never saw that coming but to be honest with you 70% of those tries are forwards tries. We work hard in our units especially as forwards for our driving mauls and I’m just lucky that I’ve managed to get the ball at the back and get to dot it down over the line, so really it’s a massive thank you to them for their hard work!

Packer is part of an unstoppable backrow trio, joined by twin sisters Bryony and Poppy Cleall, who between them have amassed a monumental fifty four tries between them this season.

Playing alongside the Cleall sisters… it’s hard to explain really but let’s just put it I’d rather have them on my team then playing against them! Bryony is a massive ball carrier with awesome handling. She’s always looking to be offloaded which is fantastic because I like to pick up on those offloads. Poppy has come in to her own this season playing fantastically and her rugby knowledge is on point. Lining up alongside them is great as I can go out and play the game in our unique style.”

The World Cup winner is no stranger to high pressure showdowns and will be looking to use her experience come game day.

“I’d be lying if I didn’t say I didn’t get nervous but I’ll be excited and probably a little bit louder than normal because the more nervous and excited I get, the louder I get! But when I need to get myself in the right place though and be very calm and collected in my thoughts before the game I can switch that on. I’m out to leave nothing in the tank and play the best rugby I possibly can for the team. As it’s a final there’s nothing to hold back on so I’m going to give it everything I’ve got."

Saracens Women play Harlequins Ladies in the Premier 15s final on Sunday 29th April at Ealing Trailfinders, 15h00 KO.
