Powell: "A Good Place to Push On"
Adam Powell praised his side’s hard work after Saracens Storm defeated Bath United 13-65 in the opening ‘A’ League fixture of the season.
Six tries in the second-half condemned Bath to a drubbing as Sarries showcased their strength in depth and energy levels. After the match, Powell delighted in his side’s approach to the game.
He said: “Our physicality from minute one was actually really good, especially our one-on-one collisions and that sort of thing can wear a team down and drain the legs so I think what we got in the second half was a result of our good physicality, particularly in the first-half.
“We were pleased, we did a lot of the things we wanted to do after setting the guys certain challenges before the game and I think they delivered on them. It was a happy dressing room in there after that. There’s still some stuff to work on but it’s still in that early stage of the season so a good start.”
Both sides traded blows in the opening exchanges as an inexperienced Bath side put on a valiant showing against a Storm side fresh off the back of a positive 2016/17 season.
Powell explained the performance, saying: “This was the first time we played this year so everyone was a bit edgy, everyone wanted to do the right thing so we gave away a few penalties early doors which didn’t help with our rhythm and it got Bath into the game.
“They did well, they capitalised on our early mistakes and got a try off one at the restart and we had to compose ourselves, we knew our discipline was poor in the first-half but our collision work was really good which is what we asked for.
“Our energy was excellent in the second-half particularly, the boys are happy and it’s a good place to push on for the rest of the season.”
