Powell identifies Sarries improvements
Adam Powell identified discipline as one of Saracens’ areas of improvement from their Premiership Rugby Cup win over Leicester Tigers on Saturday.
Tries from Schalk Burger, Sione Vailanu and Joel Kpoku, one his first team debut, ensured the Men in Black maintained their unbeaten start to the season in all competitions.
However, Sarries conceded 13 penalties in total, the majority of which coming in the second half of the 29-21 victory, and Powell is hopeful of a better all-round display against Sale Sharks should his side improve in that area.
“We did enough to win in terms of our performance but it’s not where we want to be,” he said.
“There’s a lot to work on and that’s exciting for me to see where we can actually go. We know what we’ve got to work on now.
“We have a good win behind us but we gave away too many penalties in the second half.
“We’ve got to work on our discipline and on our exit game, then hopefully we will put in a better performance.”
Saracens fielded a young team with a few experienced heads including Schalk Burger and Marcelo Bosch on the weekend.
Powell believes it was the perfect blend and insists his up-and-coming players can learn a lot from the senior professionals at the club.
“The older boys have done well particularly Burger and Bosch have really led the younger boys during the week.
“What our young boys can learn from them by training and working alongside them is invaluable.”
