Report: Saracens run riot in Atlantic Cup clash
Saracens kicked-off their preseason calendar is some style, running in 14 tries in a 92-0 win over the USA Islanders invitational team in Bermuda on Thursday evening.
The game which was played in the grounds of the Bermuda National Stadium was a fundraiser for the Islands Beyond Rugby Charity who look to help fund community projects on the island for disadvantaged children.
In a free-scoring game, in which Saracens line wasn’t threatened throughout the one-sided 80 minutes of play, Sarries were able to give three debuts to summer signings Calum Clark, Dominic Day and Christopher Tolofua. Kieran Longbottom, who has returned to the club from Saale Sharks, also featured.
Try scorers on the night were skipper Chris Wyles, who crossed for a hat-trick of tries. Substitutes Henry Taylor and Nathan Earle also crossed for trio of scores after Mike Ellery opened the scoring in the first ten minutes. Max Malins and Wyles also crossed for scores before centre Tom Griffiths’ 30th minute effort. Wyles rounded off the first half scoring as Sarries led 29-0 at the break.
After the interval Saracens continued to hammer home their supremacy, with new signing Christopher Tolofua’s first touch in a Saracens jersey a particular highlight from what was ultimately an uncompetitive game. The French hooker bulldozed his way through some sizeable USA Islanders defenders, hopefully a sign of things to come for the Sarries faithful.
The tries continued to rain down, with Henry Taylor and Nathan Earle both completing second half hat-tricks. Alex Lozowski rounded off a fine team move, collecting a Jackson Wray offload after Schalk Burger showed some real slight of hand to release his fellow loose forward in the build-up.
In the dying embers of the game Ben Earl raced away yo score before Nathan Earle ran in the last try of the evening, and his third of the game.
