Saracens Extend Unbeaten Run With Win Over Scarlets
Saracens extended their unbeaten run of European fixtures at Allianz Park to ten games as they produced a professional performance to see off Scarlets 44-26 in round two of the Champions Cup.
A faultless display from Owen Farrell - who collected 24-points on the night - plus tries from Mako Vunipola, Nick Tompkins, Marcelo Bosch, Chris Wyles and Mike Rhodes saw off the spirited Scarlets as Saracens top Pool Three after the first two rounds of the competition.
21-year old centre Nick Tompkins picked up the Heineken Man of the Match award with the fleet-footed centre scoring a fine individual effort in the first half, Tompkins was a late inclusion to the side after Brad Barritt was forced to withdraw from the team citing a neck strain in the warm-up. Owen Farrell was the stand-in skipper on the night.
After conceding an early penalty for offside that Scarlets outhalf Rhys Patchell expertly punished to give his side a three nil lead, it was loosehead prop Mako Vunipola who opened the scoring for Saracens atoning for his earlier error after 11 minutes play. It was a superb individual score from the England prop, who sold a dummy and showed some impressive acceleration to finish right of the posts. Farrell converted.
Patchell again pinned Saracens back with a three pointer only for the metronomic Owen Farrell to reply with a penalty kick of his own after twenty minutes.
The second try of the game was from Nick Tompkins. Again it was another solo try to savour from a Saracens player as he danced through some desperate Scarlets defending to finish under the posts. A fine try from Saracens England Saxons centre. Farrell converted from under the posts.
As the half wore on the immaculate Patchell and Farrell traded penalty kicks as Saracens went into the break with a 20-12 lead.
Saracens found another gear in the second half, scoring two quick-fire tries to wrap up the bonus point. Marcelo Bosch was Sarries third scorer on the night, collecting a Farrell cut out ball to waltz over seven minutes after the break, before Chris Wyles scored the all-important fourth of the game. The American wing is a prolific try scorer in European competition, this was his 21st score for the Men in Black and he showed real determination to finish move despite the attentions of the covering Scarlets defender.
The visitors hit back with a well-taken score from Aaron Shingler, who powered over after a clever interchange at the lienout with sub hooker Ryan Elias. Patchell converted expertly from the touchline.
Farrell landed a penalty minutes later to extend his side’s lead only for the Scarlets – now with a numerical advantage due to Ben Spencer’s 68th minute yellow card – to hit back through their British Lions centre Jonathan Davies.
Sarries though didn’t panic, and it was Mike Rhodes who would round off the win for the home side with a try to seal the game. Farrell converted.
