Saracens physio raising money for Meningitis Now

Saracens Physiotherapist Chris Rainbow will bucket collecting with his ‘Tangerine Team’ at Saturday’s game with Northampton Saints to raise money for Meningitis Now.

Rainbow is running the London Marathon, riding the RideLondon-Surrey 100 and swimming The Serpentine for the charity which is close to his heart as he explains.

“Back in December 2015 when only 6 weeks old Martha (my youngest daughter) contracted viral meningitis, a great shock to me and my wife Liane.

“Having been out for lunch to celebrate our wedding anniversary Martha was not her usual self. Due to Liane's mother’s intuition, Martha was promptly referred to Lister Hospital (Stevenage) and that evening was being treated for suspected Meningitis.

“Martha did not present with the assumed typical red rash (a sign of septicemia, not meningitis) but was unusually lethargic, grunting whilst asleep and spiking a temperature over 41 degrees. (Signs and symptoms)

“Martha spent a week in hospital receiving the best care any parent could want and was allowed home for Christmas to be treated as an outpatient until Boxing Day.

“Not knowing a great deal about Meningitis at the time we found the Meningitis Now website very informative and enabled both of us to make sense of what Martha was going through and the support that was available.

“We have been very fortunate (unfortunately not always the case) that Martha is now a bubbly confident three-year-old doing what a three-year-old should be doing with no ill effects from the illness.

“Meningitis Now do a lot of great research, support and awareness work; so for me to commit to running the 26.2 miles, ride 100 miles and swim two miles does not compare but is a small way for me to show my thanks for the care and support Martha received.”

If you see a bucket collector wearing Tangerine at Allianz Park on Saturday, please donate to this great charity and Chris’ cause.
