Saracens return to winning ways at Ashton Gate

Saracens returned to winning ways with a comfortable 39-0 bonus point win away to Bristol Rugby at Ashton Gate.

In-form fly-half Alex Lozowski was red-hot on the night, crossing for two tries as he continues his impressive start to life at the double winners. Chris Wyles raced in for a second half score as did Jamie George, wrapping up the bonus point with a push-over try with eight minutes left to play. George Kruis crossed in the dying moments of the contest to seal a convincing win.

Orchestrating proceedings for Saracens were their lively halfback pairing of Ben Spencer and Alex Lozowski. Both exuded confidence throughout and managed the game with real authority, underlining why both players were called into Eddie Jones’ 45-man England squad earlier that morning.

The newly promoted hosts’ defended manfully, absorbing wave after wave of Sarries attacks but with Spencer and Lozowski expertly steering the north Londoners Andy Robinson’s side struggled to gain a foothold in the game.

It came as no surprise when Saracens took the lead, and it was Lozowski who crossed for the game’s opening try - his third in five Saracens appearances since his move from Wasps.

Spotting the opportunity Lozowski wrapped around the ruck spotting a ‘two-on-two’opportunity on the blind-side touchline. The Sarries playmaker showed great acceleration after selling a dummy and raced 20 metres to score with 13 minutes on the clock.

Lozowski’s halfback partner Spencer then sent over a 21st minute penalty to extend his side’s lead to 10-0 after some tenacious work from the impressive Nick Tompkins on a kick chase.

Skipper Brad Barritt went close to adding Saracens’ second try of the night, but came up short after bludgeoning his way through two Bristol defenders as Saracens headed into the changing rooms with a well-deserved lead.

Saracens extended their lead three minutes into the second half. Ben Spencer sent over a 45 metre penalty after Bristol were penalised for offside at the play of the ball.

Lozowski then crossed for his and his side’s second of the night, somehow grounding the ball after he charged down Adrian Jarvis’ clearance kick.

On the hour mark full back Chris Wyles crossed after a series of great plays from both Schalk Burger and Jackson Wray.

With Sarries firmly in the driving seat Jamie George crossed for the side's fourth as the game petered out. The final score of the game came from Lock forward George Kruis who sealed the win with a try from close range with just seconds left on the clock.
