Saracens Touch Rise to the Challenge at Allianz Park
Allianz Park played host to the prestigious Herts and Beds Touch League Cup and Plate Final that saw eight regional touch rugby teams battling it out for the top prize.
Throughout the winter months, mini-tournaments around Herts, Beds, and North London have taken place as part of the development league. The aim was to help bring new and less experienced clubs together with more established and experienced clubs, to improve the overall skills and experience in touch rugby in a social and competitive way.
Four months of winter training culminated in the final tournament at Allianz Park with Wixams, Hitchin, Royston and Bishop Stortford from the ‘North’ clash with Saracens, St Albans, Upminster and Millwall. The standard of play was high and younger, faster teams with more touch experience made their way to the cup leaving the newer, less experienced teams to battle it out for the plate. Saracens, not quite a match for the more experienced teams yet, did not embarrass themselves in the pool stages, but made it through to the Plate competition and valiantly rose to the challenge beating Wixams in the Plate final. An outstanding performance for a team predominately made up of men and women over 40! The Cup was won by Millwall who only just saw off Hitchin in the final.
The Herts Rugby Male Player of the Tournament went to Darryl Gera and the Herts Rugby Female Player of the Tournament went Isa Riberio.
We would special like to thank Saracens Sports Foundation and Allianz Park for allowing us to use the Stadium and to Herts Rugby for sponsoring the Tournament and providing us with the trophies.
Saracens Touch sessions run every Friday evening at Allianz Park 6:15pm – 7:45pm and are open to men and women 18 years and above. No experience necessary!
