Saracens Touch Rugby duo selected for World Cup

Two of the ‘founding members’ of Saracens Touch Rugby, Colin Veitch and Mark Carlyon, have been selected for the Great Britain Men’s 50s squad to compete in the 2019 Touch World Cup in Malaysia.

The 28-nation tournament commences in Kuala Lumpur on April 29th, with more than 2,500 men and women players of all ages participating, making this the largest Touch World Cup on record.

Both Saracens Touch players have secured their places in the 16-man GB 50s team after three months of training weekends and competitive trials involving players from across the UK.

The GB squad will face Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore and Ireland. All matches are six-a-side, 40 minutes long, played in four quarters on a pitch 70m long by 50m wide.

Colin (pictured above in white), a former Saracens Amateurs RFC 1st XV Coach, is the current Chairman of Saracens Touch Rugby and has been involved in the sport’s development at Saracens from the outset:

“To be selected for Great Britain is obviously amazing - a dream come true! Discovering Touch Rugby in my fifties via the SSF coaching initiative has been a fantastic experience that has kept me active in the rugby-playing community & completely motivated.

“I know Mark and I will be doing our utmost with our team-mates to deliver success in Malaysia, and we’ll continue to share our enthusiasm for the sport wherever we go.

Mark, now playing with St Albans Touch squad in national touch competitions, echoed these sentiments:

“It's an absolute honour to be selected for the Men’s GB 50s touch team and to be playing at the World Cup in Malaysia. It'll be great to be playing alongside my Sarries team mate Colin.

“Thank you to the Saracens Sports Foundation for introducing us both to this great new sport and to everyone in the Saracens family for their support & encouragement. It's amazing to see what you can achieve at such a young age!”

Explaining the attraction of the sport, Colin summarized:

“Touch Rugby delivers for players on so many levels, which is what keeps us all enthusiastic and coming back for more.

“It’s fast, fun, tactical and designed for men and women, boys and girls of all ages and abilities. There’s no tackling, no kicking and none of the contact associated with 15-a-side or 7s.

“Everyone can quickly learn the game and benefit from participation in Touch!”
