Saracens Trio feature in England's U20 Tblisi Triumph
England U20’s took to the pitch in Tblisi’s Avchala Stadium for their opening match of the World Rugby U20’s championship, and started their title defence in fine form.
In the 74-14 win over Samoa, an impressive 33 points came from the three Sarries players featuring in the matchday team; Ali Crossdale, Max Malins and Dom Morris.
The scoring account was opened by Saracens wing Crossdale after just 2 minutes. Following some great work from the forwards, the overlap was created and the ball dotted down for the first 5 points of the day. After a successful conversion for captain Mercer’s first try, fly-half Max Malins bagged a try of his own, before converting fellow Saracen Dom Morris’ try on 27 minutes.
In a demanding tournament schedule that sees teams play a match every 4 days, managing this exciting crop of young English talent is an ongoing task for the management, so Malins was swapped for U20’s debutant Jacob Umaga at half time. Having seen 23 points scored by Saracens players in the first half, the points kept coming in earnest, through second tries coming from both Crossdale and Morris, with both players leaving the field shortly after their respective scores.
With all substitutions used, the defending champions played the last few minutes a man down, but still managed to record a 12-try triumph to start the tournament in style.
