Saracens v Exeter Chiefs Match Preview
First takes on second this weekend in this table topping encounter. Saracens and Exeter Chiefs have been a cut above the rest so far this season and currently sit five points clear of their closest chasers. With 12 wins a piece the two sides are now only separated by their bonus points tally which has given Exeter a slender two points lead at the top, taking the lead away from Saracens for the first time this season.
The story of Exeter Chiefs is perhaps one of the best rugby success stories in recent years. Promoted to the Aviva Premiership in 2010 they have since gone on to establish themselves in the top league, qualifying for the Champions Cup after only their second season and after that going to become of the regular contenders for the top positions in the league.
The Chief’s win over Northampton Saints last weekend took them to the top of the table for the fourth time in their history, although all other previous occasions were after either rounds 1 or 2. The Devon side have been on excellent form in recent weeks, with their only defeat in the last five games a close 27-31 loss away to Leicester. Fly half Gareth Steenson is currently the Premiership’s top points scorer while number 8 Thomas Waldrom has 8 tries to his name, making him the second best finisher in the league.
There have been 11 previous meetings between the two sides in the Aviva Premiership between the two sides, with Saracens emerging victorious in seven of those including the fixture earlier this season which Saracens edged 14-11. On their last trip to North London however Exeter came away with the spoils, securing a 24-20 victory in round 21 last year.
With the Six Nations finished and its stars returning to their Clubs this weekend will be a real battle between the two sides as they look to start the upcoming period of fixtures with a win.
