Saracens v Northampton Saints Match Preview
This weekend marks the first round of a Northampton double header at Allianz Park with the Midlands side also due to make the trip to North London in just under six weeks’ time for the European Champions Cup quarterfinal.
After a slow start to their Aviva Premiership campaign Northampton now have just one defeat from their last four matches and have climbed up to fifth in the table. Their away form has however left the Saints frustrated, picking up only two victories, against Bath and Harlequins, on the road in the last twelve months. Despite this Saints are so far the most successful away side at Allianz Park, having managed two wins in North London, in the Premiership semi-final in 2013 as well as a regular season victory last year.
When the two sides met earlier this season it was Saracens who emerged victorious, edging a tight content to record a 12-6 win. The Men in Black however have not beaten Saints home and away in a season since 2012/13 and have only lost at home once this season.
Saracens will be boosted by the return from England camp of Alex Goode and Jamie George for the fixture while Saints will also have their squad bolstered with Paul Hill and Courtney Lawes free to re-join the Northampton pack.
Much of Northampton’s recent form has been aided by strong performances from some of the younger members of their squad. Academy graduates centre Harry Mallinder, winger Tom Collins and hooker Mikey Haywood have all made an impression in recent weeks and will be ones to watch this Saturday.
With a strong history between the two Clubs, and with an ECC quarter final on the horizon, this weekend’s fixture promises to be a hotly contested encounter.
