Saracens v Scarlets Match Preview

Saracens face Scarlets for the first time in European competition this weekend in Round 2 of the Champions Cup.

With another big crowd expected at Allianz Park on Saturday evening Saracens take on the Welsh region as they play their first Champions Cup game of the season in front of a home crowd.

The Opposition

The Scarlets side boasts a number of Welsh international players including Samson Lee, Liam Williams and Scott Williams, and the Welsh region got off to a strong last weekend in their European campaign as they defeated Sale Sharks 28-11 at home to banish memories of their unsuccessful campaign in the 15/16 season. Scarlets however have not won back-to-back games in the competition since 2011. At home, in the Pro12, Scarlets sit seventh with three wins from six games.

Last Time Out

While Scarlets and Saracens have never met in the European Cup they have had a number of encounters in the Anglo-Welsh cup, most recently when Scarlets visited Allianz Park back in November 2013. On the day Saracens crossed over for six tries to overcome the visitors 51-10, with Ben Spencer adding 17 points from the tee.

One to Watch

As well as their Welsh internationals Scarlets also possess an Olympian in their ranks. An openside flanker renowned for his performances at the breakdown in defence, James Davies was a member of the GB 7s side that competed at this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio, winning a silver medal as Team GB reached the final of the tournament. Back in the 15-a-side game Davies has over 50 caps for his club and has scored 55 points since making his debut in 2014.

We Said

“They’re very dangerous. They’ve got some unbelievable players in that backline, full of internationals and full of players who can hurt you, who make line breaks, who take people on who can pull rabbits out of hats at some times. I guess we’ve just got to concentrate on ourselves and put in a performance that hopefully we’re proud of.” – Owen Farrell
