Saracens Women continue winning streak
Saracens Women continued their winning start to the season as they overran Gloucester-Hartpury by a score of 33-7 away from home in the Tyrrells Premier 15s sixth round. Two tries from winger Garnet Mackinder plus scores from Sonia Green, Rosie Galligan, Poppy Cleall and points from the boots off April Brown and Zoe Harrison handed the visitors another bonus point win.
Going into the fixture the teams sat second and third in the table so all eyes were on the Westcountry clash and it didn’t disappoint. Sarries struck first after just five minutes as the forward pack looked to stamp their authority on proceedings early on. Gloucester Hartpury found themselves on the wrong side of the breakdown allowing April Brown to nudge the resulting penalty to the corner. A solid catch and drive followed which saw Sonia Green drive over for the opening score.
The home side got caught again at the ruck allowing April Brown to line up a kick in front of the posts and add three points.
The visitors lost their defensive clean sheet in a rare lapse of concentration as Ceri Large put up the high ball and the ball ricocheted out for Ellie Kildunne to snipe and score Gloucester-Hartpury’s first and only try of the afternoon.
It took Sarries only five minutes to respond through their dominant forward pack. El Perry was exceptional on her Premier 15s debut both up front and in the loose, as Sarries outmuscled their opponents. Poppy Cleall made yards off the base of every scrum and set Garnet Mackinder up for Sarries second as she broke down the wing leaving defenders in her wake
Captain Lotte Clapp was on the end of a high tackle which saw Courtney Gill sent to the bin for ten minutes and Sarries jumped on the extra player advantage to go over for their third. A penalty from a dominant scrum was quickly recycled for lock Rosie Galligan to bulldoze over after a series of tight picks and give the visitors an 18-7 point going into the break.
Rob Cain made a change at half time with Zoe Harrison taking to the field. The young fly half making an immediate impact with her smart kicking and slick distribution. The pressure continued to mount and the Sarries scrum set up the bonus point try for Poppy Cleall to add to her tally and extend the lead to 25-7.
Garnet Mackinder went over for her second of the afternoon as Sarries played wide off a well executed lineout for the winger to cross in the corner.
Sarries were forced to do their share of defending as Gloucester-Hartpury carried well through No.8 Abi Burton but the Sarries wolfpack kept the home side at bay with some huge hits from Harriet Austin, Cara Wardle and Player of the Match Sonia Green.
Zoe Harrison rounded off the game with a three pointer as Gloucester-Hartpury conceded a penalty at the death and the fly half nailed the kick from 35 metres out to give Sarries a 33-7 victory.
Speaking after the match head coach Rob Cain said: “The players hard work was rewarded this afternoon. We were frustrated with our performance last week - our focus points reflected that. Our work rate and accuracy matched our tempo and we were a lot more ruthless in the collisions today.
We dominated the set piece and were much more of a threat in the wider channels and defensively we were frustrated to concede but lots of positives to take into the next week.”
