Saracens Women Sign Olympic Stars
Saracens Women are delighted to announce the signings of England and GB sevens stars, Claire Allan and Emily Scott for the 2016/17 season.
Allan and Scott were both members of the Team GB sevens squad which competed in the Rio Olympics this summer.
Allan is no stranger to Saracens having played for the club for three seasons before moving across to Richmond Ladies in 2010. The 31 year old from Twickenham has represented England in two Sevens World Cups and was also a member of the squad who lifted the fifteens World Cup trophy in 2014.
On joining Saracens Women this season, Allan said: “On returning from 7s, there wasn't any doubt in my mind who I would play for. Sarries is where I played my most exciting and enjoyable 15s rugby, so I'm looking forward to putting the shirt back on. With the mix of experienced players like Sonia Green leading the way and talented youngsters on the squad, it makes for a great season.”
Flyhalf, Scott has progressed through the England age groups having played at under 20 level before breaking through to the senior ranks. The 24 year old from Essex fractured her fibula playing for former club Thurrock Ladies against Saracens 2XV in a Championship fixture at Allianz Park in the 2014/15 season but bravely battled back to earn herself an Olympic spot. Impressive outings for the GB Sevens squad at tournaments in Las Vegas and Vancouver was enough to catch the eye of the coaches and book herself on the plane to Rio.
On her arrival at Allianz Park, Scott said: “I'm really excited about joining Saracens for this coming season. I'm looking to develop this year in preparation for the World Cup and moving to a premiership club is the first step in that journey. The club have been very friendly and welcoming and I'm looking forward to getting out there and playing.”
Both players missed out on Premiership action last season as all full time sevens contracted players were abstracted ahead of the Games, however with the 15s World Cup looming next summer they are returning and will be available for selection this weekend.
Speaking of the new signings, head coach Rob Cain said: “We are delighted to welcome both Claire and Emily to Saracens. I am excited because as players they will fit in very well with our playing ambitions and as people they match the club and group’s philosophies.
“It’s an important year for them both with competition for the upcoming Rugby World Cup squad being decided over the coming months and I’m delighted they have chosen us to help them achieve their goals and reach their ambitions through their performances for the club."
“They have both been concentrating on sevens culminating with the Olympic Games only last month and I know all their experience will benefit the younger players we have at Saracens. We are all about inner competition and opportunity so am looking forward to them adding to this and taking their chances during the season.”
