Saracens Women sink Sharks with 8 try victory
Saracens Women secured a bonus point win away to DMP Sharks on Sunday, maintaining their Premiership clean sheet this season.
The visiting side took control in the early stages applying huge pressure to the Sharks line with wave upon wave of dynamic attack leading to a penalty. With momentum on their side Saracens opted to kick to the corner rather than take the three points however an impressive DMP defence stood strong and denied Saracens as the ball was held up over the line three times. It was skipper, Sonia Green who finally broke the deadlock pushing over from a strong 5 metre scrum after 9 minutes.
Sharks responded positively and kept the ball well through their forward pack, lead by the impressive Tamara Taylor. Gaining important territory the home side entered into the Saracens 22 and were rewarded with a penalty which Sam Jamieson duly slotted to narrow the gap.
For the remainder of the half it was one way traffic with Saracens ramping up the tempo and looking to attack from all over the park. Player of the match, Lotte Clapp opened her account for the afternoon, a powerful driving maul sucking in the Sharks pack allowing the winger to dart over in the corner. Backrow, Poppy Cleall retrieved the resulting restart and made a barnstorming break, linking to fellow flanker Hannah Gallagher who sliced through the midfield to put centre, Lauren Cattell through to run in from half way. Full back Charlotte Barras added the extras. Gallagher was instrumental again in setting up Saracens fourth try, some fancy footwork teasing the Sharks defence and feeding Clapp for her second try. The visitors taking a 22-3 lead into half time.
Saracens started the second half with the same attacking intent as the first 40 minutes, a loose ball gathered by Clapp reaching Cattell who showed her class to dance through with another long range attack from half way. Cattell secured her hat trick shortly after following a sublime break from her centre partner Nina Vistisen.
Saracens coaches will be encouraged by the impact of the bench as replacement Carrie Roberts darted through to score following a break from winger Deborah Fleming. Second row Marcella Collins got on the scoresheet as she read the play for an easy interception to score.
DMP continued to battle until the final whistle and were rewarded for their efforts with a well taken try for Fi Davidson who spotted a gap around the fringes to round off the afternoon.
