Sarries 'full of excitement' for Cup clash - Saunders
Jared Saunders says Saracens are heading into Sunday’s Anglo-Welsh Cup clash against Leicester Tigers full of ‘confidence and excitement’.
A win for Saracens will guarantee a home semi-final but they face a strong Tigers side who head to Allianz Park on the back of a confidence boosting win against local rivals Northampton Saint.
Saunders was a cornerstone of the team that lifted the Anglo-Welsh Cup in 2015, when Maro Itoje captained the side to victory against Exeter Chiefs at Franklin’s Gardens. It was a memory that Saunders says he will cherish, and he is hoping that the class of 2017 can repeat the glory as Sarries look to defend their title.
“There’s a lot of belief in the team after a big win last weekend," said Saunders. "Going over to Wales is always a tough ask, playing against a good Scarlets side, so we’re heading into today with a lot of excitement. We’re working hard, we don’t have to change much and I think with the group that we’ve got I think we’re strong. Everyone is working hard and busting their balls, it’s a good place to work. We’ve got to stick to what we’re good at and if we do then it will serve us well.
“It was a great feeling (to win the Anglo-Welsh Cup in 2015). It was the first trophy that I’d ever won, a lot of the boys who are involved now were on the bench that game so I’m sure they’d love the chance to experience another final but there’s a lot of rugby to play before we can even begin to start to think along those lines. To do it again would be fantastic but I think our main focus will always be on the next game.”
