Sarries' mental toughness pleases Vunipola

Saracens number 8 Billy Vunipola was pleased with the mental side of the Wolfpack’s game during their 25-20 win over Harlequins.

The England international, who showed great honesty in the first period by telling referee Luke Pearce he had knocked on close to the line, scored late on at The Stoop to seal a memorable Sarries victory.

Vunipola followed his try with an Alan Shearer-like celebration, similar to Danny Care’s earlier in the contest, and the 25-year-old revealed that was definitely on his mind when he did it.

He said: “You’ve got to give as good as you get and watching Danny celebrate the way he did frustrated me and the team as well. We did well to keep that as a motivating point but not just that bit.

“There’s always a little bit extra for us against Quins and it’s a tough place for us to win; the last time we won there was when Charlie Hodgson was playing, that’s how I remember it.”

Vunipola continued: “We can still get better.

“I thought we did well to stay in the game and we were brilliant in terms of our mental toughness and resilience.

“I think if we can marry that up with our accuracy and playing in the right places then we’ll be fine.”

Saracens' next home match is against Lyon in the Heineken Champions Cup on Saturday 20th October. Purchase your tickets via
