Spencer ends season as Sarries' top Premiership try scorer
Ben Spencer finished the regular Aviva Premiership season as Saracens’ top try scorer after picking up another two in the win over Gloucester on Saturday.
The scrum-half, who featured on the wing in the 62-12 victory, came off the bench to take his personal try tally to 10 for the campaign.
Both scores came from good support play, off the shoulders of Alex Goode and Jamie George, something Spencer has tried to do all season.
“I’m happy to get on the scoresheet again and just happy to get on,” he said.
“I’ve played wing a few times before, this season and in previous seasons. I’ve just got to be there to support sometimes and that’s what I’ve done this season.
“I feel good and a lot of it is down to the hard work the boys put in on the pitch.
“The boys put in a hell of shift, we’re happy with our performance and it’s a big two weeks ahead now.”
Sarries hit the 50-plus mark for the fourth game running, once again keeping their opposition out in the second half.
Whilst impressive, Spencer recognises the Men in Black need to match that same intensity and standard in the first period.
He said: “We’re obviously delighted with how the past few weeks have gone.
“We spoke before the game about how we wanted to start and we didn’t get off to the best of starts so that’s obviously something we’ve got to work on for the next couple of weeks and hopefully we’ll start big in the semi-final.”
Sarries face Wasps in the Premiership semi-finals at Allianz Park on Saturday 19th May (12H30). Tickets are on sale! To get yours, click here.
