Team News: Saracens Women vs Loughborough Lightning
Sydney Gregson will make her first start for Saracens Women against Loughborough Lightning on Saturday in a top-of-the-table clash at Allianz Park.
The 22 year old signed for Saracens just before the international break and came off the bench against her old club Bristol Bears just days after arriving back in the UK from Australia, where she had spent the summer playing for the University of Sydney.
Gregson is one of a number of changes to the team which last played in the Tyrrells Premier 15s on 3 November, with seven players (Hannah Botterman, Poppy Cleall, Vicky Fleetwood, Zoe Harrison, Sarah McKenna, Marlie Packer and Elle Perry) still away with England, who face Ireland at Twickenham on Saturday evening, and one (Jodie Rettie) on duty with Scotland, who play Canada next Tuesday.
The trio involved with the England National Academy Squad this week - Lauren Cattell, Rosie Galligan and Georgie Lingham - are all available again, however, and have been named in the starting XV.
Loughborough are also missing several key personnel, so the fixture is a chance for those on the fringes of selection to stake their claim for a place.
Head coach Alex Austerberry said: “Saturday is a huge game against top of the league. It’s a real test of quality of both squads, and we’re excited not just about the opportunity to play the best team in the country currently, but also about seeing what some of the other players can do who are coming in to replace those on international duty.
“It’s a great chance to see how strong we are as a collective group.
“The focus has been on the international calendar for the last couple of weeks, but the rest of our squad has been working very hard to ensure we put in the sort of performances we’re capable of once the league is back in action.”
